Modern Office Organization

The last time my office got an official “overhaul” was back in 2014, you can see the throwback here. When the trends were still very bright and cheery and my aesthetic gravitated toward Oh Joy, rather than minimal and clean. These days I’m loving white, bright and light wood tones (as evident by the rest of the house). Still with some subtle pops of color.

I have A LOT of crap to hide, so as much as I want to actually be minimal, I need storage and organization. I am planning to tackle our basement level soon, but a complete office overhaul isn’t in the cards at the moment. I will slowly start to update and improve storage solutions in my office, maybe get it up to an instagramable level soon. Below are is my inspiration and clean picks for storage and organization.

Happiness Project Month 2

I am officially through one month of my happiness project. I feel like I am doing pretty well. I did not accomplish or tackle everything on my list, but I think I laid a really good foundation for the rest of the year in month one. January was all about organization. While there were several one-time tasks I did not get to, like clean off my computer, that I didn’t get to, but there were a lot of wins in the column of setting good organizational habits that I think I will keep.

There are several big things I began doing this month that I want to toot my horn about. I got into the habit of doing all the dishes after dinner and putting them away before bed, so in the morning and when I get home from work the counters are clean. I put a small trash can inside the entry closet to toss unwanted mail. And, I established a cleaning routine, every Sunday morning in January I spent about an hour and a half to two hours cleaning the house. I cleaned the bathrooms, vacuum, cleaned the kitchen, and every other week dusted or washed sheets. These three simple things have made my home and life seem to run a little more smoothly. I have been giving up my leisurely Sunday morning, but I’ve gained outer order and inner calm.

Here is the list of goals I set for myself at the beginning of the month. I crossed out the items I checked off my list.

JANUARY - Organization

  • devise a system for keeping counters clear

  • develop a cleaning routine

  • solve the mail sorting issues

  • finish organizing office

  • purge and complete closet organization

  • sort junk drawers

  • organize and delete computer files

  • clear desk top, digital and physical

  • delete photos and apps from phone

  • sell, donate or recycle unwanted clutter

  • do a time mapping exercise to best organize my time

Here are a few of my favorite organization products I picked up this month.

Now that January is in the books it’s time to look toward February. This month I’m focusing on finances. Talk about and “being good at” money has always been an Achilles heel. Hopefully this power month of thoughtful reflection and planning and discussing with my partner will kick my butt into gear!

FEBRUARY - Finances

  • do a full asset/liability assessment

  • write down financial goals short and long term and align with Kyle

  • make a plan to pay down debts

  • start contributing to 401K again

  • make appointment with financial advisor

  • stick to budget 100%

I have to admit I seriously geek out over good organization. I like to spend days, weekends even, sorting, cleaning and making labels for my closets, drawers and cabinets. An organized space functions better, and something that functions better, makes your life better, thus an organized space really makes your life better. In fact, one of my favorite organizers on the list below, Shira Gill, argues that cleaning and organizing your sock drawer can change your life. No seriously, she explains herself in episode #216 of The Life Coach School Podcast. She also has a free download guide to tackle small space to change your life! I totally believe it too. I’ve been thinking about how much better my life would be if my desktop, both physical and virtual were clean, but I never take the time to put in to practice a system that would keep them both clean forever. These Instagram accounts are inspiring me to change my ways and up my organizational game. Here Container Store, take all of my money!

DIY Customized Modern Storage Baskets

I don't even remember the last time I shared a DIY with you, and now that we are currently homeless, aka bunking with family, it may be awhile before the next. With just two bedrooms to share between our little family, organization is on the top of my mind. I have long been on the search for the perfect storage baskets for a reasonable price. I have found options that I love, but are just too far out of my budget to purchase more than one. I've also bought baskets piecemeal at Home Goods that were affordable, but didn't give that beautiful, perfectly organized feel. But then, I found these beautiful white metal baskets at Target, for a very fair price. As a designer and a general home goods virtuoso I have learned a trick to elevate any product, add a touch of leather, and that is exactly what I did with these baskets. Scroll to see the tutorial.

I LOVE these metal baskets with wood handles, but at $24 - $50 a pop, they are more than I want to spend on storage baskets, so I got out my supplies.

Tosca Basket with Wooden Handles

Assuming you have the tools in your kit, the amortized cost of making these baskets is $11.30 for the small and $12.30 for the large, a very reasonable amount of money to pay for a beautiful, modern, metal storage basket.
